Postcards of Rijeka

A place of great history, called Fiume in Italian and St. Veit am Flaum in German, is the main seaport of Croatia. In 1919 it was occupied by the Italian legionaries led by poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, and for a short time proclaimed an independent republic, the first state in the world to recognize the newly established Soviet Union. From 1924 to 1947 was included in the Italian state.
