Postcards of Malta

malta Malta is an island Republic, independent from the UK since 1964 and a sovereign state since 1974, situated in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily, formed of three larger inhabited islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino - and smaller desert islets, with a typical flat, rocky terrain.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Malta was for centuries the seat of the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (also known as the Knights of Malta). The largest of the seven islands of the Maltese group, the Island of Malta includes the capital Valletta, and other towns as Sliema, Mdina (the ancient capital), Birgu, Bormla, Isla, Qormi, Siggiewi, Sliema, Msida, Zabbar, Zebbug, Zejtun and other smaller centers. The second largest island is Gozo, the mythical Ogygia where nymph Calypso detained Odysseus for years. Its capital and main city is Victoria.
