Sitting Buddha

Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai, China

Description - The original temple was built in 1882 to preserve two jade statues brought from Burma by a monk. The temple was destroyed during the 1911 revolution but the statues were saved and a new temple was built in 1928. The two statues are carved each from one whole piece of white jade and represent a Sitting Buddha and a Recumbent Buddha. The picture here shown represents the Sitting Buddha, 190 cm high, encrusted with precious agates and emeralds.
